Apple’s New AppMigrationKit: Bridging the Gap Between iOS and Android Data Transfer

In a move that could transform how users switch between operating systems, Apple recently revealed documentation for its new framework — AppMigrationKit. Designed for iOS and iPadOS 26.1, this framework aims to make it easier for developers to include their apps’ data in the migration process between Apple and non-Apple devices — essentially, iOS and Android.

This marks a major step forward in Apple’s effort to simplify digital transitions, reducing friction for users who frequently change devices or ecosystems.

What is AppMigrationKit?

AppMigrationKit is Apple’s newly developed framework that allows a one-time transfer of app data between Apple and non-Apple platforms. Unlike existing migration tools that focus on iOS-to-iOS transfers, this framework is specifically designed for cross-platform data movement — bridging the gap between iPhones, iPads, and Android devices.

The framework enables developers to specify whether their apps will import, export, or both, ensuring that user data from supported apps moves smoothly during setup. When a user sets up a new device, all apps using AppMigrationKit automatically include their data in the migration package.

Not Just Another iOS Tool

Apple has made it clear that AppMigrationKit is not for iOS-to-iOS or iPadOS-to-iPadOS migrations. Instead, it focuses on non-Apple platforms. The system doesn’t activate the framework for iOS apps running in visionOS or macOS, and it ignores calls from Mac apps built with Mac Catalyst.

This targeted approach shows that Apple wants to create a more cooperative ecosystem — one where users can transition between Android and iOS without losing valuable app data or configurations.

Transfer to Android: A Two-Way Street

Apple is also integrating this framework with a new system option under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone, called Transfer to Android. This option will show users what can and cannot be migrated during the process.

The exciting part? The system is designed as a two-way bridge. Android devices will also soon support a “Transfer to iPhone” option, which may initially focus on eSIM transfer but could expand to include broader data migration functions in the future.

For Developers: Preparing for AppMigrationKit

Developers interested in making their apps compatible with AppMigrationKit can review Apple’s documentation, which details app extensions, export and import processes, migration code testing, and performance tracking.

However, since the framework is still in beta, Apple warns that the final version may differ from the preview:

“This documentation contains preliminary information about an API or technology in development. This information is subject to change, and software implemented according to this documentation should be tested with final operating system software.”

While not yet confirmed for release alongside iOS 26.1, the publication of the documentation signals that AppMigrationKit could debut soon.
