Apple Releases iOS 18.3 Beta 3: Key Changes and Updates


Apple has rolled out the third beta version of iOS 18.3 for developers, bringing notable changes to notification summaries and introducing various enhancements across the system. While previous beta versions had minimal updates, this release offers significant improvements aimed at refining the user experience.

Notification Summaries: A Temporary Pause

In response to multiple issues and complaints, including one from the BBC in December, Apple has temporarily suspended its notification summaries feature for apps in the News and Entertainment categories. The feature, which aggregates and summarizes notifications using Apple Intelligence, had faced backlash after delivering misleading content.

Apple announced that notification summaries will return in an upcoming update—likely with the final version of iOS 18.3 or later. The company is working on better distinguishing between summaries generated by Apple Intelligence and actual media content. Additionally, a clarification update will indicate when displayed text is AI-generated. Users are encouraged to report any issues if they receive unexpected or misleading notifications.

Issues That Led to the Suspension

Notification summaries faced criticism after incorrectly citing sources such as the BBC, falsely reporting news related to public figures. As a result, Apple is taking extra precautions to ensure accuracy and transparency moving forward.

To improve user experience, summarized notifications now appear in italic text, helping users differentiate them from standard notifications. Additionally, summaries can now be easily disabled directly from the lock screen, by swiping on a notification and selecting the "Options" button.

1. Genmoji in Messages

2. PDF Cropping Update

When editing a PDF file via the screenshot interface, a new warning message now informs users that cropped content isn’t permanently removed. Although hidden from most PDF viewers, the cropped area may still be visible in some applications, ensuring better awareness and security of sensitive content.

3. Camera Controls Enhanced

On iPhone 16 models, Apple has renamed the AE/AF lock feature to "Lock Focus and Exposure." This change aims to make the feature more understandable to users unfamiliar with technical camera terminology. Users can activate it by lightly pressing and holding the camera control button, mimicking DSLR camera behavior.
