iOS 18 Brings RCS Messaging and Other Exciting Features to iPhones


Apple has recently rolled out iOS 18 to the general public, following its big September event where it unveiled the iPhone 16 series, the Apple Watch Series 10, and more. With iOS 18, Apple has introduced several new features, including Rich Communication Services (RCS) support in Messages, enhancing the way iPhone users communicate with Android devices. What is RCS Messaging and Why Does it Matter?

RCS messaging offers a richer text messaging experience by providing features like typing indicators, read receipts, and "Delivered" status messages when chatting with Android users. RCS also ensures higher-quality photos and videos are sent, making it easier to share multimedia content seamlessly across platforms.


One limitation, however, is that RCS messaging on iOS 18 does not yet support end-to-end encryption between iPhones and Android devices. The GSM Association, which develops the RCS standard, has indicated that they are working to enable end-to-end encryption between these platforms, aiming to make RCS a secure choice for cross-platform messaging.


Does Your Carrier Support RCS on iOS 18?

While major U.S. carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile support RCS on iPhones running iOS 18, support can vary by carrier, especially for users outside the U.S. Here’s how you can check if your carrier supports RCS messaging on your iPhone:


  • Open Settings.

  • Tap General.

  • Tap About.

  • Tap Carrier to view your messaging support details under IMS Status.

Apple is expanding support to more carriers with the upcoming iOS 18.1 update, which includes support for several additional carriers, such as Telenet, Proximus, and BASE in Belgium, as well as TracFone and C Spire in the U.S.


How to Enable or Disable RCS on Your iPhone

Enabling RCS on your iPhone is straightforward. If your carrier supports it, follow these steps to activate RCS:


  • Open Settings.

  • Scroll down and tap Apps.

  • Select Messages.

  • Tap RCS Messaging under the Text Messaging section.

  • Toggle RCS Messaging on or off.

This setting brings your messaging experience closer to iMessage when communicating with Android users. You’ll still see the familiar green bubbles, but with the added benefits of RCS.
