Samsung Patents Dual-Screen Phone with Clear Screen

Samsung Patents Dual-Screen Phone with Clear Screen

Samsung may be exploring bringing its smartphone line to a new level with a novel design that will make its back panel much more useful than just containing the camera island and company logo.

Transparent Dual Screen

According to a patent application submitted with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), Samsung is thinking of manufacturing a new kind of smartphone with a transparent display on the back. When not in use, the second display, according to the application, blends in with the rest of the phone's rear panel. The patent application was submitted in January and was released this week. The handset illustrated in the illustrations is akin to an always-on display, which flashes information such as music transfer completion even when the screen is switched off.

However, this is just one of many possible applications. A second rear-facing screen may also make taking selfies with the back camera simpler. The second screen, according to the datasheet, may "produce a live view picture of the subject." If this appears familiar, it's because ZTE released a comparable phone called the Nubia X in 2020. However, there are some significant variances. While ZTE's version simply employed a glass panel with a greater opacity to conceal a standard screen when turned off, Samsung's patent suggests that the phone will feature a true display on the back. According to the patent application, the transparent display may "visually show at least a part of an interior region of the second surface." A notification panel is another possible use.

Wrapping Up

It is worth mentioning that like with any other patent application, it is possible that this invention will be abandoned at any point. If, on the other hand, the patent is approved, it would herald in a new age of smartphone design that, hopefully, will bring dual-screen phones into the public, as Samsung has done with its folding phones such as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4.
