Xiaomi Mi 12S Ultra to be Unveiled with the Sony Camera Sensor



The Xiaomi Mi 12S Ultra will be released in India on July 4, 2022, while the exact day has yet to be verified. The phone will have eye-catching features and specs. Expect a significant camera enhancement.

Smartphones rarely have large camera sensors however with its impending 12S Ultra flagship, Xiaomi seems to be the latest firm to try to grasp the elusive.

According to a Weibo tweet, the phone would include a 1-inch sensor co-developed with Sony. That's around 1.7 times the surface area of the 1/1.33-inch-type sensor in the primary camera module of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. It's also the same sensor size as Sony's $1300 Cyber-shot RX100 VII, which is the small camera's ultimate, final-boss form.

It's significant since no one has fully mastered the 1-inch smartphone camera, even Sony, which incorporates a sensor of that size but only utilizes a portion of it in the Xperia Pro-I. As aforementioned, this update is quite unusual and we do not expect other smartphone manufactures to clone it anytime soon. The larger sensor, larger pixels, and larger lenses would provide considerable picture quality advantages over smaller, typical smartphone cameras, particularly in low light.

Xiaomi isn't stopping with the sensor: the business enlisted the help of Leica, albeit this is far from Leica's first smartphone camera endeavor. To be honest, conventional camera manufacturers' cooperation with smartphone OEMs have yielded nothing more than a label on the camera and a lot of marketing bluster.

In this instance, at least, Xiaomi is investing time and money in co-developing new hardware. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun claims that the $15 million cost of building the new sensor was divided equally between Xiaomi and Sony.

Unfortunately, the 12S Ultra will almost certainly never be available in the United States since it is incredibly difficult for Chinese businesses to get a foothold in our market. In any event, the phone won't be available for long: Xiaomi claims the 12S Ultra will be introduced to the globe on July 4th at 7 p.m. China Standard Time.
