iPhone 14 To Have Large Pill-Shaped Cutout

According to latest reports, the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro models will be replaced by two separate pill-shaped and hole-punch cutouts that will house the TrueDepth camera system hardware for Face ID, but as we learned today, the cutouts will be combined together using software, appearing as a single long, pill-shaped cutout when the iPhone is in use.

iPhone 14: Design Changes to Expect

The iPhone 14 will, according to numerous sources, include a pill-shaped cut-out similar to those present on Android devices. The area between the two cuts will presumably be utilized to display the orange and green dots that signify when an app activates the camera or microphone. When the hardware is active, these indicators are now shown to the right of the notch, but bringing them front and center on the iPhone's display would make it more obvious when the camera and microphone are in use.

Having the green dot front and center while the camera is activated will make using an iPhone seem more like using a Mac. When the webcam is in use on a Mac, there is a green indicator light that cannot be turned off, and it is situated immediately next to the camera.

Apple is reportedly going to allow users to touch on the green and orange dots to get additional information about which applications are utilizing the iPhone's hardware. For example, if a large file transfer app is using your location, a green dot will light up. That information is now available in Control Center, with Apple identifying applications that have recently utilized the camera, microphone, and location.

According to sources, Apple will also revamp the Camera app, shifting most of the buttons to the top of the screen to give customers a better view of the camera preview, although this change is "still not completely locked in."

When the privacy indications are turned off, the area between the two cutouts on the iPhone 14 Pro models is blacked out, giving the appearance of a single cutout. The iPhone 14 models will have a regular notch and hence will most likely retain the same hardware indications as the iPhone 13 devices.
