Google Android Tablet App’s Get Much-Needed Focus

Google has stated that it is upgrading its Android tablet applications to help them perform better on larger-screen devices. Google has announced that updates for Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep will be available in the coming weeks.

Android Apps Have Finally Been Updated

Drag and drop capability is being added to Docs, Sheets, and Drive, allowing you to effortlessly move items like as text and photos from one app to another. Meanwhile, Drive will be able to open two files side by side, similar to the capabilities Apple added to the iPad with the 2019 iPadOS update. Keyboard shortcuts are also coming to Drive, Docs, and Slides, making them considerably more convenient to use for anybody with a Bluetooth or cable keyboard connected to their Android tablet.

The changes are coming as Google has revived its interest in Android tablets over the last year. Early in 2022, it launched Android 12L, an upgrade to the operating system designed for large-screen Android devices including Google tablets and foldables. The firm then said at its I/O developer conference in May that it was trying to strengthen the app environment for Android tablets. It said that it was working with third-party developers to better optimize applications such as TikTok, Zoom, Copy My Data and Facebook, and that it will be providing improvements for over 20 of its own apps, some of which are already available.

There are many ideas as to why Google is suddenly focusing more on Android on tablets after seemingly neglecting this area of development for years. The first is that Google intends to make a significant comeback to the Android tablet market next year, launching its own tablet for the first time since the disastrous Google Pixel Slate in 2018. Investing in its tablet app ecosystem now would undoubtedly enhance this tablet's prospects when it is introduced. It will also help other Android tablet makers, since the software on their devices will improve.

There's also the gradually rising market for foldables, which depend on having software built for large-screen devices to make the most of the expanded screen real estate. Although they remain niche devices in the perspective of the larger smartphone industry, interest is rising. Samsung recently reported that the industry delivered 10 million foldable devices last year, a 300 percent increase over 2020. And there have been persistent whispers that Google is working on its own foldable gadget. Regardless of whether these grander ideas come to fruition, Android tablet consumers will undoubtedly be grateful for these more practical changes in the meanwhile.
