Raspberry Pi to unveil a Wi-Fi board for Only $6

The Raspberry Pi Foundation, in collaboration with Broadcom, created a line of compact single-board computers known as the Raspberry Pi. The IT company just introduced a slew of new, low-cost goods. The business is capitalizing on the popularity of its $4 Pico board, which has sold just under two million copies since its introduction in January 2021.

$6 Wi-Fi Board

The new Pico W is available today for $6; the "W" (plus an extra $2) adds 802.11 Wi-Fi connection to the system. The Pico H ($5) adds a pre-populated header enabling interoperability with other systems, while the Pico WH ($7) has both. The first two are now available, while WH will come sometime in August.

According to the firm, its boards have found a lot of success outside of their original hobbyist and instructional emphasis, as corporations have started to integrate the controllers directly into their products. We've seen very complex pieces of machinery such as contact sharing tools being operated by these low-cost systems more than once in the field.

Interestingly, the business reports that the chip scarcity has boosted sales to third-party manufacturers significantly. "We always believed that [Pi Pico] was a great fit for commercial and industrial applications, but the global semiconductor shortage has vastly accelerated adoption,” founder Eben Upton notes in a post. “With millions of units on hand today, and pipeline in place for tens of millions more, design engineers who have been let down by their current suppliers have a perfect excuse to experiment.”

The inclusion of Wi-Fi opens the system up to a plethora of intriguing networked IoT/smart gadgets. And the pricing is absolutely appropriate for the corporation to sell a few million more by this time next year.
