Chrome Password Manager Upgrade Allows Manual Logins on All Platforms

Google has been quite busy this year with the Pixel devices, revamping Google Calendar and much more. The latest app to receive new features is Google’s browser, Chrome.

The Silicon Valley tech firm is revamping its built-in password manager for Chrome and Android, hoping to position it as a viable alternative to independent services like as 1Password and Bitwarden, the firm stated today.

Updated Password Management

The option to explicitly add passwords to the service, rather than depending on Chrome's offer to remember credentials when you use them, is the most important. There have previously been indications of this capability on Chrome for desktop, but Google now claims it will be accessible across "all platforms."

The search engine giant also claims to be working on unifying the design of the password manager across Chrome and Android to provide "a streamlined and unified management experience," which includes a function that will automatically aggregate numerous passwords used on the same site. Google claims a new "Touch-to-Login" feature for Android lets users input their credentials through an overlay at the bottom of the screen, making logging in apps such as clone phone even faster.

On Android, Google's password manager already checks for and automatically changes weak and overused passwords, while on iOS, it autofills stored passwords across applications other than Chrome. Google says it will continue to invest in its password manager in order to enable upcoming technologies such as passwordless passkeys, which Apple plans to add to Safari as well.

Despite delivering a feature set that is increasingly equivalent to standalone third-party password managers, Google is hesitant to separate its password manager into a separate app. However, as of this month, 9to5Google says that you can add a shortcut to Google's password manager immediately to your Android homescreen - a significant improvement over having to wade through your Android settings to access it.
