Google's Chrome Introduces Memory and Energy Saver Modes

Google Chrome users can now experience improved browsing with the Memory and Energy Saver modes. Google announced the features for Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chromebooks in December, and they are now widely rolling out.

Here's what you need to know about the Chrome Memory and Energy Saver modes:

How to Enable Memory and Energy Saver Modes on Google Chrome

Both Memory and Energy Saver modes are enabled by default, and you can turn them on/off from Chrome Settings > Performance (in the sidebar).

Chrome Memory Saver

The Memory Saver automatically "frees up memory from inactive tabs" to allocate more resources to other pages and apps on your computer. The inactive pages will remain visible in the tab strip and immediately reload when you navigate to them. Chrome will indicate that the tab was frozen and is "Active Again" with a speedometer icon in the address bar.

Memory Saver Made Chrome Faster

Chrome uses up to 30% less memory with Memory Saver, and it can be used to keep your active video, apps such as smart transfer and gaming tabs running smoothly. You can change Memory Saver's settings anytime in the Settings menu.

Chrome Energy Saver

Chrome's Energy Saver conserves battery power by limiting background activity and visual effects, including animations, smooth scrolling, and reduced video frame rates. When active, you may "notice changes in gaming and video performance." Energy Saver is represented by a leaf icon to the right of the Omnibox with the ability to quickly disable.

How to Automatically Enable Energy Saver

Besides on/off, you can also have Energy Saver automatically enable when your battery is at 20% or lower or when your computer is unplugged.

Rollout of Memory & Energy Saver Modes

The features are now widely rolling out with Chrome 110 on Mac, Windows, and Chromebooks in recent days. If it's not yet live, you can use the following flags:

  • chrome://flags/#battery-saver-mode-available

  • chrome://flags/#high-efficiency-mode-available

Summing Up

Google Chrome's Memory and Energy Saver modes are handy features that can improve browsing performance while also conserving battery power. Users can easily enable or disable these features from the Chrome Settings.
