A Comparison of Nothing Phone 1 & Nokia X30 5G

Nothing Phone 1 has recently been slashed in price, making it an even better deal for a solid mid-range device. However, a good software experience is crucial, as seen in a previous comparison with the Nokia G60 5G. In this article, we will compare the Nothing Phone 1 with the Nokia X30 5G, the current top offering from HMD Global.

Build Quality

The Nokia X30 5G takes the lead in build quality, with a slimmer and narrower profile and a Gorilla Glass Victus protected front, giving it a more robust feel. In contrast, the Nothing Phone 1 is an upper mid-range device, priced aggressively to make it accessible to more buyers.

Display & Fingerprint Scanner

Both devices feature an in-display fingerprint scanner, which is efficient and accurate. However, the Nothing Phone 1 is slightly quicker. Both devices have fantastic displays with an OLED Puredisplay on the Nokia X30 5G and an OLED HDR10+ certified display on the Nothing Phone 1. The Nothing Phone 1 also offers a 120Hz refresh rate, offering a smoother experience compared to the 90hz display from Nokia.

Performance

The differences in processing power between the two devices are negligible for most cases, with near stock Android experiences on both devices. App launches are fast for even file transfer apps and there have been no reports of crashes or stutters on either device.

Loudspeaker & Audio

The loudspeaker on the Nokia X30 5G needs improvement, with a hollow and lacking sound compared to the dual speaker output on the Nothing Phone 1, which offers a loud and clear output.

Imaging & Multimedia

The Nokia X30 5G is touted as the best Pureview device to date, but sharpening and higher contrast is apparent on the Nothing Phone 1, which may look nice but does not represent the actual scenario. The best Pureview device will be interesting to see how it competes with a phone where imaging is not its strong suit.

Final Thoughts

The Nokia X30 5G is an interesting combination of a premium sensor in a mid-range packaging, while the Nothing Phone 1 is an upper mid-range device priced aggressively to reach more buyers. With the upcoming Android 13 update, HMD Global should focus on fine-tuning the experience on the Nokia X30 5G, including improving the speaker output, outdoor readability, and imaging algorithms.
