Samsung is testing the Pixel 8's third-gen Tensor chip

Google's Pixel 6 series introduced a slew of firsts to the Pixel portfolio. The introduction of the Google Tensor processor was maybe the most significant. While Google created it in-house, the firm solicited the assistance of Samsung to put it together.

This partnership seems to be continuing for the foreseeable future, as Samsung is said to be hard at work developing a next-generation Google Tensor processor – one that may be intriguing if you're intending to delay your Pixel purchase until 2023.

Google Pixel 8's Tensor Chip

It's worth noting that we're not discussing the Tensor chip's second generation here. After all, the Pixel 7 is set to arrive in a matter of weeks, and prototypes are already in the public, so it wouldn't make sense to start testing that SoC right now. Instead, according to a tip from GalaxyClub, this one seems to be the third-generation Tensor, which is scheduled to debut on the Pixel 8 next year.

We are rather positive of this lead since, for one thing, the chip, codenamed Zuma, is being tested on a development board known as Ripcurrent, while the future Tensor processor was previously known to be tested on a developer board known as Cloudripper. It also bears the model number S5P9865, but the original Tensor had S5P9845 and the second-generation Tensor had previously been identified with the model number S5P9855. The latest chip will make it easier to carry out complex functions such as bulk transfer photos easily hence we expect top-notch features for the Pixel 8.

Of course, the Pixel 7 — and its second-generation Tensor — have yet to be released. The Pixel 8 is still a year away and is most likely in the early stages of development. Regardless matter when these reports circulate, we recommend accepting them with a grain of salt. Given Google's habit for having images of forthcoming phones appear inexplicably everywhere on the Internet months before their debut, it won't be long before further facts regarding the Pixel 8 start trickling in.
